Axion organised another fantastic tournament on 23rd April 2016. Prizes were only in the top 8 but the winner got two byes for GP Prague and a Judge Mana Drain!

Unfortunately we have had no UK Legacy tournaments with more than 50 players since Axion’s last Legacy event in December 2015. Perhaps later in the year we will see some homegrown events like Northern League and BOM and MKM Trials break the 50 player barrier, although I expect the BOM London and MKM London main events to be well above this mark.

As an aside, 50 players is a totally arbitrary number for meta evaluation, but I think for the UK represents the times when players travel out of their local area for Legacy. For example the early Northern League events last year (here and here) had around 40 local players but when either part of the country traveled we nearly doubled that.

If any TO’s have aspirations of holding large Legacy events in the UK please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me so I can help drum up interest and hopefully get more players involved. Also get in contact if you want to talk about my methods of analysis.

Here is a full breakdown of the decks played at the Axion Legacy event in High Wycombe on April 23rd 2016, 64 players total.

Here the Delver decks have been combined as they have a similar plan and builds.

Axion meta

These three divisions show the percentage of Tier one and Top 8 decks and the Brainstorm, Non Brainstorm divide.

MTG The Source DTB in March were Eldrazi, Miracles, Grixis Delver, Infect and Death and Taxes.

MTG The Source DTB 17 (27%)
thegraymerchants.com Top8 29 (45%)
Brainstorm Decks 33 (52%)

The UK meta has changed slightly from our last data set. The proportion of Tier One decks has gone down by 6% and the percentage of Brainstorm decks by 7%. Without any more data sets we don’t know if these are typical fluctuations or gigantic swings. Also lacking more regular data we can’t say yet if this is a trend away from Blue, a diversification of which decks are considered competitive or an influx of new players to Legacy because they are slightly less likely to play Tier one or Brainstorm decks.

A relatively large proportion of fringe decks like Dredge and Burn again showed up at Axion as we predicted after the last tournament. There were also 15 graveyard based decks, Lands, Reanimator, Dredge and TinFins, again 22% of the meta.

I am surprised at the low number of Shardless and Eldrazi decks. These show up in massive numbers on the continent and the competitiveness of Eldrazi when compared to price seems like it should be a draw for lots of Legacy players.

Here we can see that the proportion of decks roughly conforms to the current norms on mtgtop8.com

Axion meta2

The Axion Top 8 consisted of

Miracles Painter Miracles Lands
Lands ANT 4C Stoneblade Reainmator

None of the 10 Delver players or 6 Death and Taxes players made the top 8. The number of Lands and D and T players would certainly have made it hard going for any Delver players out there.

As preparation for BOM Annecy I recorded the last five big European Top 8 decklists to give us an idea of what does well on the continent. As the UK metagame gets more established we will be able to see any difference between UK and EU Legacy.

The events were

  • MKM Milan 6/2 108 players
  • TOP Milan 13/2 110 players
  • BOM Madrid 29/2 136 players
  • VII Arcanis Deluxe 23/4 200+ players
  • Ovino Spring 24/4 187 players

Eu meta

We seem to have decks with similar successes to the rest of Europe in as far as our love of Miracles and Delver decks. Last year Shardless was the best performing deck in the UK with respect to Top 8 appearances, only having one pilot in the last event is probably an outlier. The Axion tournament certainly looked good for Shardless.

I hope that some of this data comes in handy when deciding what you want to play at the next big UK tournament or GP Prague and congratulations to everyone who got to the Top 8 for some spectacular prizes. A special thank you to Francois and Liz for putting on another great tournament!

Tom Kellock
Tom has played Magic since Alara block. He became quickly enamoured with Legacy after being strangled by a Pox and 43 Lands deck in 2011 while piloting Affinity. This experience also started a love of Prison strategies in a manner typical of Stockholm Syndrome sufferers. He now only really plays Legacy, with Top8’s in Europe at BoM and here in the UK.
